ARTIST STATEMENT
I work in a variety of mediums, however, the majority of my work these days is in the area of portrait photography. I generally work in a series – my first series, in 1979, was the result of months spent photographing the goings on in a seedy bar affectionately called “the bloody bucket” by its patrons. In the not so recent past, I photographed women (which I continue to do) for “The Goddess Project.” Last summer I spent time working on a literacy project in Burundi, and photographing a country that is trying to recover after the genocide. I use my images to raise money for the Burundi Education Project. Presently, I am working on a couple of series simultaneously: large abstractions, and dyads (a mixed bag of couples, sisters, objects — all twosomes in relationship).
If you are interested in seeing examples of my work, please go to www.hatzes.net. I welcome requests for commissioned portraits and am represented by AmericasArts, LLC. If you are interested in commissioning a photograph for the dyads project, call me at 717 642-5064.
If you are interested in learning more about my work in Burundi, and seeing the photographs I took there, go to: http://burundieducationproject.blogspot.com.
I live in Fairfield, PA with my husband, my mother, and two large dogs. During the day I am Director of the Learning Center at Shippensburg University.
