“Come for the History, Stay for the Art.”

The Arts Council is playing a role in the economic recovery by building a schedule of live art and entertainment in Lincoln Square throughout the Summer and Fall.

The Gettys Square Art Oasis is featuring live music and theatrical performances, live art and cooking demonstrations, and art displays and more.

As Gettysburg emerges from the pandemic, we need a strong year to help our small businesses.

Nearly 45% of Adams County income is dependent on tourists.

The pandemic has resulted in fewer tourists, struggling small businesses, and depressed county and borough tax revenue.

By providing free, live artistic entertainment from May through October in the heart of downtown Gettysburg,

we are also providing an outlet for local artists while drawing tourists to our downtown businesses.

In addition, people are seeking ways to re-socialize in a setting that feels safe and comfortable.

Having raised over ½ of the needed funding,

we encourage tourists to engage with the local art community by staying longer.

Our goal is to promote more businesses district shopping, eating and overnight stays!

You can help us provide a full Summer and beyond of activities on the Gettysburg Square Art Oasis through your donations.

UPDATE:   We have now raised over $20,000; enough money to build the Art Oasis stage, hire a PT entertainment manager,

and begin an entertainment schedule for Friday and Saturday nights through October.

What’s needed?  To expand our schedule and market events, your donations will enable us to:

  • $1,500 purchase safety covers for electrical cords, an entertainment announcement board, and advertising in the local newspaper.
  • $2,000 will enable a PT staff person to manage holiday activities on the Art Oasis outside of the season.
  • $14,400 entertainment for 2021 and in to 2022.

Research shows that communities, including rural communities, with a strong arts presence are more economically resilient and sustainable (for more, see January 2019 publication of Rural Prosperity through the arts and creative sector: A rural action guide for Governors and States.)   By creatively placing art in public spaces (creative placemaking) we can integrate our local artists and arts organizations into the many initiatives to rebuild a post-pandemic Gettysburg economy.  Our goal with Gettysburg Square Art Oasis is to build on our tourist revenue – and give tourists a reason to stay several days in Gettysburg.  Art will complement the battlefield experiences and appeals to all ages and demographics.
